DESIGN INTENT
I intend to create a fun and adaptable piece that brings a pop of colour into the user's home and can be used however suits them best.
WHAT IS SWITCH?
Switch is a furniture piece that consists of a number of individual components that can be rearranged to create a chair, a recliner or a coffee table.
Each individual component is customisable and replaceable. These components would be available in a variety of colours and materials, so the buyer could pick and choose, and really make the piece their own. The ability to customise each aspect of this design means that if any of the components are ever damaged, then the buyer can simply purchase the individual component that they are in need of, saving on cost and preventing excessive waste.

MANUFACTURE
While the concept of this design is centred around providing a range of material and colour options, I chose to complete this project using wood.
Switch is made out of solid wood panels and held together via dowel joints. Each piece is CNC cut with minor adjustments that would need to be made manually.
PROTOTYPING
When prototyping, a few changes had to be made due to material constraints.
The final prototype was made hollow out of plywood. These pieces were all cut using a CNC machine and secured using nails, brackets and wood glue. Despite the changes made for prototyping, I learnt a lot about manufacturing and constraints that I wouldn’t have considered without the first-hand experience that came from building.
